Where does FSU football land in ESPN’s FPI rankings after Alabama loss

FSU football's second consecutive loss has pushed the Seminoles further down ESPN’s Football Power Index.

FSU dropped two spots to No. 39 nationally in ESPN’s latest FPI rankings following its 50-36 road loss to No. 10 Alabama. The Seminoles, now 1-2, carry an FPI rating of 7.8 entering their Week 4 matchup with Central Arkansas.

Florida State entered the weekend at No. 37 in the model before falling in Tuscaloosa. FSU jumped out to a 21-6 advantage against Alabama, but the Crimson Tide eventually took control and finished with 567 total yards in the victory.

The Seminoles are now the eighth-highest-rated ACC team in FPI. Miami leads the conference at No. 6 nationally, followed by Louisville at No. 23, Pittsburgh at No. 25, SMU at No. 26, Virginia Tech at No. 29, Virginia at No. 34, and Duke at No. 35. Florida State sits immediately ahead of several other ACC programs, including Clemson at No. 42.

ESPN’s updated projections also paint an increasingly narrow path for the Seminoles. FPI projects Florida State to finish approximately 5.6-6.4, while giving the program a 52.7% chance to reach six wins. FSU’s projected chances of winning the ACC have fallen to 0.4%, while its College Football Playoff probability sits at 0.8%.

ESPN describes FPI as a forward-looking measure of team strength, expressed in points above or below an average team. Its season projections are generated from 20,000 simulations using results to date, team ratings and the remaining schedule.

Florida State will have an opportunity to stabilize its season Saturday when it returns to Doak Campbell Stadium for a sold-out matchup against Central Arkansas.
