Where Notre Dame stands in ESPN’s FPI rankings after Week 1

Notre Dame’s second-half surge against Wisconsin on Sunday is an example of why the Irish are considered one of the top teams in the country this season.

Following the 41-13 victory, the Irish’s position remained the same in ESPN’s latest College Football Power Index (FPI) rankings. Notre Dame, currently No. 3 in the updated rankings on Monday, has an FPI of 27, just over three points behind the leader Texas at 30.3. Ohio State is just behind them, and most likely a shakeup at the top come next weekend, as the Longhorns host the Buckeyes in Austin.

The Irish’s projected win-loss average is 10.8-1.2 which is No. 2 behind Miami, while their percentage to win out the season is currently an FPI-best 31.8%. The Irish have 77.2% chance to make the College Football Playoff, 20.4% chance to reach the CFP national championship game and an 11% chance to win it all.

Looking ahead at remaining Notre Dame schedule, the Hurricanes are ranked No. 4, BYU is No. 19, and SMU rounds out the top-25 opponents at No. 24. The Badgers are No. 53, so this should be viewed as a solid, but not spectacular win to start the year.
