MIAMI, Fla. – Coach Mario Cristobal and offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson have experience in leading an explosive offense. In the 2024 season, the Miami Hurricanes had the best scoring offense – a 43.9-point average in 13 games – among Football Bowl Subdivision programs.
Quarterback Cam Ward and wide receiver Xavier Restrepo led the charge – both currently on the Tennessee Titans.
A new season approaches and the Hurricanes have a new star quarterback and wide receiver looking to produce similar results. Coming off a National Championship appearance, Darian Mensah is taking over the reins and Malachi Toney is one of the most electrifying playmakers in college football.
Given the new duo and the rest of the supporting cast, the Hurricanes have a legitimate chance to replicate the 2024 scoring success. According to On3, the program will have the best offense ahead of the 2026 college football season. The Hurricanes were ranked above Oregon, Ohio State, Texas, Ole Miss, and Notre Dame, among others.
Mensah is one of the most prolific quarterbacks returning to college football. He spent last season at Duke – completing 334 of 500 passes (66.8 percent), throwing for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns, including six interceptions, in 14 games. Mensah led the Blue Devils program to its first Atlantic Coast Conference football title since 1989.
Despite not having an elite supporting cast, the 21-year-old proved to make the best of a mediocre situation. Upon arriving at the Coral Gables campus, Mensah was surrounded by high-quality weapons, including former Duke teammate and All-ACC wide receiver Cooper Barkate.
The Hurricanes provided the new star quarterback with proven and successful backfield production – the same supporting cast as last season, including local star Mark Fletcher Jr.
Sharing the wide receiver room with Toney and Barkate are South Carolina transfer Vandrevius Jacobs, Joshua Moore, West Virginia transfer Cam Vaughn, and Daylyn Upshaw.
Although questions surround the offensive line – losing four starters to the NFL – and the lack of proven production from the tight ends room, outside of Elija Lofton, it shouldn’t hurt the Hurricanes’ chances of competing for a National Championship.
The offense has enough firepower to carve out explosive plays and light up scoreboards. Unlike 2024, the Hurricanes have a remarkable defense. Despite losing edge rushers Akheem Mesidor and All-American Rueben Bain Jr. to the NFL Draft – both were first-round selections – there are no signs of a setback occurring.
A promising season is approaching with National Championship expectations.
