‘You need to step away from football’: Former NFL star calls Clemson head coach ‘shameful’

This past week marked the start of the 2026 college football season. Saturday, the SEC kicked off with the LSU Tigers and the Clemson Tigers matching up in Death Valley. Clemson fell to LSU 51-10, starting their season off 0-1. The loss sparked major concern for Clemson’s Dabo Swinney, as the once-illustrious head coach’s career is in decline.
Former NFL star and current FS1 analyst Emmanuel Acho took to his YouTube podcast Speakeasy and addressed Clemson’s embarrassing loss and Dabo Swinney’s legacy moving forward.

“Dabo Swinney, you need to step away from the game of football if you are not going to adjust. If you are going to be willing to adjust to the times, and I know you have been anti-transfer portal for so long, you have been anti-paying players for so long, hey, Dabo, either get on the train or get run over. And as it stands right now, you’re getting run the hell over,” Acho said.
“I feel bad for Clemson fans; y’all are used to championships, y’all were used to pulling some of the greatest upsets, winning national championships with true freshman quarterbacks, and now you are, to some degree, the laughingstock of powerhouse football. How in the world do you lose by five-six touchdowns on national television with the whole world watching? That is shameful. Dabo, either get on the train or get run the hell over, but it is shameful what is going on now with the Clemson Tigers.”
The 41-point loss at the hands of LSU marks the biggest margin of deficit for Swinney in his entire career.
“This one is over. I know everybody’s focus will be on the score,” Swinney said during a post-game presser. “We’ve got to put our focus on what we can control. This one is over. It’s a tough opener, and it was kind of a worst-case scenario for us. … We can’t let it define us or destroy us. We’re going to get better.”
Clemson looks to face off against the Georgia Southern Eagles for their home opener next weekend.
