Penn State's OC Reveals What Everyone Already Thinks About WR's

When we look at why Penn State didn't come away with a win on Saturday against Wisconsin, there's a long list of reasons.
For one, quarterback Rocco Becht was terrible, completing just 12 of 29 passes for 114 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. The defense was brutal in the fourth quarter, and I think a lot of it falls on head coach Matt Campbell.
Campbell had a 17-point lead, and instead of keeping his foot on the gas, he decided to play scared, something that simply can't happen in the Big Ten. Teams will put up points when squads do this, and Penn State found that out the hard way. More so, one of the bigger problems on Saturday was Penn State's inability to get wide receivers open.
Outside of Chase Sowell, who finished with six receptions for 70 yards, nobody got much going in the receiving game. Penn State's offensive coordinator recently said that he needs to do a better job of getting these guys the ball earlier in the game.
“We’re gonna have to find ways to get them the ball and easier ways to at least make those throws,” Taylor Mouser said, per StateCollege.com. “And I still don’t think we’ve sniffed just how good that room can be, and just the standard I think those guys can play with. But from an attitude and effort standpoint, it’s pretty good, I have to do a better job of giving those guys the ball.”
“Everything after games like that is always being evaluated,” Mouser said. “Are you playing the right people, are you putting the right people in the spots to be successful? And through the first four games, you hope to have found a rhythm with one of the guys or like a bell-cow, and we haven’t yet.”
Penn State has some decent wide receiver play, at least in terms of talent. It's far off from some of the other top teams in the country, something that we've said for many years now, so it's not like fans are expecting Penn State to come out and be the best offensive team ever on that side of things. However, some guys in this wide receiver room can make plays.
My problem with Penn State is that it hasn't even given these guys an opportunity to show how good they can really be at times. That's a problem in itself, something that Mouser is simply going to have to fix sometime in the near future. If not, this season won't go according to plan.
