The Ohio State Buckeyes are preparing for the invasion of Kinnick Stadium as they set their sights on taking down the Iowa Hawkeyes.
We discuss the game preview and so much more on this week's episode of the Buckeye Breakdown Podcast.
The main takeaway from college football last week was that the teams that played with their food and let their opponent hang around, they were defeated. The teams that tapped their opponents out won big and convincingly.
The two most egregious games happened in the Big Ten. The Penn State Nittany Lions had a 17-0 lead over the Wisconsin Badgers before totally taking their foot off the gas pedal and giving up their lead, ultimately losing the football game.
In the late-night game, Washington did the same thing at home, against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Minnesota stuck around all game and then upset the Huskies with a last-second field goal to win.
Then, the Michigan Wolverines did exactly the same thing against Ohio State's next opponent, the Iowa Hawkeyes. Instead of burying the Hawkeyes, Michigan just never slammed the door shut, and Iowa's heart just kept beating. Then, all of a sudden, they had a chance to win the football game as the clock was expiring, and they did.
Each of those scenarios, held up next to Florida's performance, is a really shocking realization of what teams should be doing against inferior competition.
Florida took the lead against Ole Miss and didn't stop, literally, until the clock hit zero. They continued to keep their foot on the gas pedal, and while the score looked like they ran it up, it's because they did. It's better than blowing the lead.
It was hopefully a major wake-up call for the Buckeyes, as they tried to do the same thing against Illinois when they let them hang around. If they do that against Iowa this week, they will get beat. Simple as that.
On the table this week is a massive milestone for Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. He is just nine catches and 1 touchdown away from achieving the Buckeyes' all-time triple crown.
Other storylines on Saturday are the rotation and the players that Ryan Day decides to play. There are several young players who we thought were going to be major contributors, but haven't done anything to this point.
Saturday will be a major day for the Buckeyes, and they need to do whatever they can to get a win. To do that, hopefully they learn from their mistakes and the mistakes of others from last weekend.
