Former Nebraska and current Oregon quarterback Dylan Raiola has been heavily criticized for his commitment to cosplaying as Patrick Mahomes, but there was nothing performative about his actions after playing the worst game of his life.
The No. 13 Oregon Ducks lost 17-15 to the No. 21 UCLA Bruins on Saturday. Raiola threw for 43 yards, zero touchdowns, and two interceptions on 31.6 percent completion before getting benched in favor of Brock Thomas.
Raiola could have ducked into the locker room and sulked, but he faced the media and offered an admirable explanation for wanting to do so.
“I’ve got a younger brother, and he looks up to me,” Raiola said to open his postgame press conference. “I mean, this isn’t just football, this is life, and tough situations happen. You gotta own them. There’s no running around ’em. There’s no dodging ’em. The product we put out there — the product I put out there — I gotta live with that. I gotta own everything, take it on the chin, and move forward. We’ve got a quick turnaround”
“I owe the respect to you guys,” Raiola added. “I owe the respect to the fans and everybody that’s incorporated with this thing.”
Here’s Dylan Raiola on why he decided to address the media today.

Apologies about the audio tick. There were issues with Oregon’s board today. https://t.co/tKK7gCB2sh

After transferring from Nebraska to Oregon in January, Raiola entered this season as star quarterback Dante Moore’s backup. Moore suffered a terrifying concussion against the USC Trojans on Sept. 26, forcing Raiola into the game.
Raiola lit up the Trojans’ defense to the tune of 289 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Ducks to a satisfying 41-27 win. After Raiola crashed back down to earth against UCLA, however, Oregon is in trouble without Moore.
It may not be enough to satisfy disgruntled Ducks fans, but Raiola set an example at the podium. Take notes, Dan Lanning.
