Indiana football is used to its doubters at this point.

Countless voices across the media and fan landscape downplayed the Hoosiers’ breakout season in 2024 under Curt Cignetti, going as far as questioning their inclusion in that year’s College Football Playoff. Indiana wasn’t even projected to be in the Big Ten Championship Game last preseason before eventually winning it. Even now most projections on the 2026 season have the Hoosiers taking a step back.

Those doubts now extend to Indiana’s new starting quarterback, Josh Hoover, per reporting from ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg. One anonymous Big 12 defensive coordinator called him “a pretty average to slightly above-average guy,” while an unnamed Big Ten coach claims to like him, not love him, ultimately thinking he’s good.

Indiana will, for the third year in a row, look to overcome its doubters.
