Ole Miss and LSU are heading into a matchup that has become one of the weekend’s biggest talking points in the football community. Two undefeated top-10 teams are set to meet, while Lane Kiffin’s return to Oxford adds another context to the rivalry.
With emotions already running high, security around the game has also received plenty of attention. Now, an unusual rule for Ole Miss students has fans talking before kickoff.
CFB Fans React to Ole Miss Student Section’s LSU Gear Ban
Ole Miss Athletics has warned students that LSU apparel and purple-and-gold colors will not be allowed in the student section. Students wearing opposing-team gear could be denied entry or removed from the section, according to the notification.
The policy comes as Mississippi prepares an expanded law enforcement operation around campus and the stadium.
The security plan reportedly includes 65 to 70 state troopers, a surveillance helicopter, and a mobile command center. Louisiana State Police will also send 15 officers, while a protective fence has been placed around the area where LSU team buses will arrive.

The heightened precautions come with Kiffin returning to Ole Miss after leaving the Rebels for LSU ahead of last season’s College Football Playoff run. Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry has even joked about using military aircraft and the National Guard to protect Kiffin and the LSU team. Kiffin, meanwhile, told his players to focus on football and leave security matters to officials.
The unusual measures have since caught the attention of college football fans on X.
One fan questioned whether the student-section restriction would accomplish much, writing, “Banning LSU gear from the student section is actually insane security theater, nobody asked for this energy.”
Another fan took a more humorous approach to the situation, writing, “Lane Kiffin turning a regular college football ticket check into a geopolitical border crisis is cinema. Saturday in Oxford just leveled up.”
The discussion then shifted toward what the restrictions could mean for the atmosphere inside the stadium.
One fan wrote, “Ole Miss really doesn’t want LSU fans anywhere near that student section 👀😭If they’re going this far to keep the visiting fans out, you already know the atmosphere is going to be wild.”
With the game also featuring major SEC and College Football Playoff implications, another fan kept the focus on the matchup itself: “The football Gods chose a banger tonight!”
Some reactions used humor to address the extensive security presence. One fan wrote, “They are trying to prevent a murder.”
Another fan focused on the university’s response, writing, “This school is completely broken over football lmao”
