Pac-12 College Football Coach Quits at Halftime of Blowout Loss

Last week, Illinois head coach Bret Bielema revealed the program was parting ways with defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck after a blowout loss to Ohio State.

Coaching staff changes being made after games are somewhat more normal in college football and the NFL. But a Pac-12 program saw a coach quit on his team at halftime amid a beatdown on Saturday.

Colorado State gave up two touchdowns to Oregon State in the first quarter before Rams head coach Jim Mora made a change with his defensive coaching staff. He decided to relieve defensive coordinator Tyson Summers of his play-calling duties and gave the responsibility to co-defensive coordinator, associate head coach Kenny McClendon.

During his postgame news conference, Mora told reporters that McClendon’s first play call resulted in the strip-sack fumble of Oregon State quarterback Braden Atkinson. The Rams would score a touchdown on their ensuing offensive drive.

The Beavers would then score touchdowns on their next six possessions before earning a 56-26 win over the Rams in front of a crowd of 41,000 at Canvas Stadium.

Mora told reporters it was Summers’ choice to leave the team at halftime when the score was 35-14 in favor of Oregon State. He was later fired.

“Tyson was relieved of his play-calling duties,” Mora said. “He left the field, and he is no longer with this football program… That is a permanent.”

Mora suggested he didn’t intend to fire Summers during the game.

“That wasn’t anything that I would ever consider,” Mora said. “I just relieved him of his duties as a play caller. He made the decision on his own to leave the field, and he is no longer with the program.”

Summers became the defensive coordinator at CSU in 2025 and was named the interim head coach for the final five games of that season after Jay Norvell was fired. The Rams went 0-5 under Summers.

Colorado State had given up 41 points in a loss to BYU and 59 games in a loss to UTSA in the two games prior to playing Oregon State.
