‘This Is Indefensible,’ ‘That’s Grounds for Termination’ — CFB Fans Reject ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit’s Controversial Steak Order

No. 13 Tennessee fell to No. 1 Texas 20-17 on Saturday at Neyland Stadium in the Vols’ SEC opener, with Kirk Herbstreit on the call for ESPN. During the broadcast, Herbstreit revealed during College GameDay that he eats his steak well done with A1 sauce.
He had already been roasted by fans for his on-air appearance earlier in the day. This was a second wave of fans roasting the ESPN broadcaster.

104.5 ESPN’s Chris Marler was among the first to weigh in, and he joked about not being able to stand for Herbstreit’s choice of steak order despite his long-standing support of the ESPN analyst.
“Kirk Herbstreit just said on live television he eats his steak ‘Well Done with A1,'” Marler wrote. “I’ve defended @KirkHerbstreit for a long time. Does an incredible job. But this is indefensible. @CollegeGameDay”
The reaction from fans was swift. The steak order went viral on social media, and the verdict was nearly unanimous.
“Herbstreit just said he likes his steak well done with A1 sauce?” commented one fan.
“Told me everything i needed to know 😂😂,” quipped another fan.
The jokes kept coming as the game went on.

“Always knew something up with him 😏,” wrote another user.
“Surprised Saban didn’t toss him off stage after that nonsense 😂,” wrote another user.

The game Herbstreit was calling ended with No. 1 Texas surviving a scare at Neyland Stadium. The Longhorns beat No. 13 Tennessee 20-17 to move to 4-0 on the season and open SEC play with a win.

Tennessee’s offense never got going. The Vols finished with 221 total yards and were held to just 85 in the first half. Faizon Brandon went 17-of-29 for 145 yards and a touchdown, but Tennessee allowed 10 sacks and left briefly in the first half with a shoulder injury.
Colin Simmons was the story on the Texas side, racking up five sacks to tie the Longhorns’ program record. Kayin Lee’s interception was Tennessee’s lone defensive turnover. A Qua Moss punt-return touchdown in the third quarter was one of the Vols’ biggest plays of the night.
Tennessee drops to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the SEC. They host Auburn next Saturday, Oct. 3, at 3:30 p.m. ET.
