Notre Dame's reputation as "O-Line U" is getting a fresh jolt of validation heading into next season. Athlon Sports has ranked the Fighting Irish offensive line as the No. 1 unit overall in college football, emphasizing how key of a role the men up front will be responsible for as the team enters the season with high aspirations.
The recognition from Athlon comes as Notre Dame enters the year as a consensus top-five team, including No. 4 in Athlon's own preseason Top 25. Elite offensive line play has long been a backbone of Notre Dame's identity, and this group is expected to again set the tone physically for an offense with playoff aspirations.
Notre Dame has stacked strong recruiting classes in the trenches in recent recruiting cycles, and the result is a room full of competition has raised the floor of the unit.
The Irish will be relying heavily on their offensive line to live up to championship aspirations. The margin for errors for all the top teams in the country, not just Notre Dame, will be razor thin next season. In that context, having a dominant offensive line could end up being a necessity and not a luxury.
